Ph.D. Fellowship Program
IAF’s Fellowships provide support for Ph.D. candidates to conduct dissertation research in Latin America and the Caribbean on topics related to grassroots development. Funding is for between four and 12 months.
The 2018-19 deadline will be announced in the fall. Benefits include a round-trip, Fly America Act compliant, economy-class transportation to the field research site from the Fellow’s primary residence, and to additional countries of multi-country projects – up to a maximum of $3,000; A research allowance of up to $3,000, pro-rated monthly; A stipend of $1,500 per month for up to 12 months, partial months are pro-rated; Emergency accident and sickness insurance (A cash allowance is provided for Fellows who are natives of the country of the research. In multi-country studies where the Fellow is a citizen of one research country, the cash allowance is provided for the period the Fellow is in the country where they hold citizenship; Fellows will be enrolled in the emergency accident and sickness for the remainder of the funded period.) Attendance (all expenses paid) at a required orientation workshop at IAF’s office in Washington, D.C. (traditionally in October) to meet IAF staff and create synergies between the Fellow’s research and IAF work.Attendance (all expenses paid) at a required “mid-year” Grassroots Development Conference (traditionally in February) to share findings and discuss progress with each other, members of the IAF’s academic review committee and IAF and IIE staff.
